So recently, my Twitter feed has been exploding with the hashtag of Chinese privilege and it perked my interest. I googled Chinese Privilege in Singapore and the first link that popped up was a Tumblr link http://thisissgchineseprivilege.tumblr.com/
tbh I think it's dead cos the last post was last year September.
But anyway the blog was filled with mostly anecdotes of the minority in Singapore facing instances of racism or micro-racism from Chinese.
Most of the dissent was how Chinese have it 'all'. Media, language and employment are some of the aspects that have been touched on. And in short, the answer to it it's not because of racism but purely Singapore's economy.
Let's use an analogy to represent this situation. Mac computers are famed to not face any virus attacks compared to Windows computers. But this is widely misunderstood that Mac computers are more secure etc. It's bullshit. If you are a hacker and your aim is to spread your virus to the majority of the people, what OS would you target? Windows. And even in Windows, you probably won't target Windows 98, Windows 7 and 10 ( 67%of laptops/desktop OS) will be your primary target. You won't waste your time on the minority OSes.
There is nothing personal.
Same for Singapore's economy. Around 74% of Singaporeans are Chinese. If you are the boss of a private company and needed to target a certain demographic, which demographic will you choose that can potentially land you the most returns?
Nothing personal.
There was a post on the blog that argued: Chinese privilege is having station names announce in Chinese on DTL and NEL MRT. Why aren’t the announcement be in Tamil or Malay as well?
Alright first up, there is no need to announce station names in Malay. Why? Because all our MRT station names are either originally Malay or already translated to Malay. Actually, station names are already English/Malay. If you learn Bahasa Melayu, you would know that translating "Choa Chu Kang" will still be “Choa Chu Kang”.
But why announce it in Chinese? My suspect is tourism so I went to Singapore Tourism Board’s website to see tourist statistics (all modes of travel https://www.stb.gov.sg/statistics-and-market-insights/marketstatistics/ivastat_nov_2016%20(updated%2011jan17).pdf ) and the top 5 countries are China at 2.6m, Indonesia at 2.5m Malaysia and India almost tying at 1m and Japan at 721k.
And yes, China is leading in terms of absolute number and from 2015 - 2016, there is a 36% increase in tourists from China. 36% bro. what the fuck. In comparison, Indonesia has a 5.9% increase.
I’m an going to assume that all these Chinese announcements are not for Singapore’s population and it is not very far fetch to assume that. I have yet to hear any of my Chinese friends pronouncing “Somerset” in Chinese. Singaporeans generally pronounce MRT names in English/Malay.
So I am going to also assume that all these Chinese announcements are for the tourists from dominantly mandarin speaking countries (such as Taiwan and hong kong which adds up to 3.5m tourists in 2016). There is really zero to none Chinese Privilege that I see, its all business see. Nothing personal.
Another post which I assumed to be the admin What nonsense is this about Malaysia and Indonesia not being as successful? You have an arbitrary definition of successful. I think Indonesia is more successful as a multiracial nation because it has so many more religions and native practices than us that are flourishing. In Malaysia, there are holidays for Thaipusam, Indian astronauts and 8 out of 10 of the richest men are Chinese. So I think Malaysia is a hell of a lot more successful at helping its minorities than Singapore.
Bruh, have you not seen what happened last year November in Jakarta. The resentment against the Chinese minority in Indonesia runs very very deep. And the Chinese make up ONLY 1-4% of the population. And i would urge you to go read up on the history of Indonesia to understand their current situation.
Basically, the point is that I want everybody reading that blog to take it with a pinch of salt. In my very honest opinion, Singapore is still the best example of a multi racial country. The government has taken many many steps to make sure that our minorities are included, no other government I seen has taken so many measures. I would really hate to see it all get torn up because of the lack of misunderstanding.
And I wouldn't deny the existence of Chinese privilege. When I was in volleyball in secondary school, we would sometimes shout commands in Mandarin yet having team members who were Malay. Didn't think much about it at that time but looking back, its very unfair for my malay friends to end up learning and understanding some of it.
But that’s not racism. Its different.
And please do remember that racism is a serious crime in Singapore, racism undermines national security. It can be reported to the police, please do not treat it lightly.
Tbh, zero racism is almost impossible in any society. Its only human nature, yet I still feel that understanding and tolerance are ways to overcome all these bullshit.
